Kilograms, pounds and stones
The factor is a definition
Since 1959 the international avoirdupois pound has been exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, agreed between the national standards bodies of the English-speaking countries. That makes converting between the two a single division with no approximation in it: the only rounding on this page is the rounding chosen for the display.
Where the three columns come from
The table gives pounds and then stones and pounds, because both are in daily use for different things. Pounds alone are how weight is quoted in the United States, on scales, and in most sport. Stones and pounds are how body weight is still said out loud in Britain and Ireland, where 70 kg is 11 stone rather than 154 pounds.
Weight is not mass, strictly
A kilogram is a mass and a pound is used as both a mass and a force, which is why physicists distinguish the pound-mass from the pound-force. For anything a person weighs on a bathroom scale the distinction does not matter, and this converter treats the pound as a mass throughout.
Questions people ask
How many pounds is 70 kg?
154.32 lb, which is 11 stone 0.3 pounds. Most people would call that 11 stone, and gyms and airlines both round it to 154 lb.
Why is a pound not half a kilogram?
Because the two units were defined independently, centuries apart, and only reconciled in 1959 when the international pound was fixed at exactly 0.45359237 kg. Half a kilo is 1.1 lb, which is close enough that recipes get away with it and freight does not.
What is a stone, in pounds?
Exactly 14 pounds. It survives in Britain and Ireland for body weight and almost nowhere else, which is why a British weight is often given as a stone figure and a remainder rather than a single number.
