About these audio tools

Sound is decoded in the page and written back out in whichever format you asked for. Every trip between two lossy formats adds a little damage, so the tools show the bitrate they found and say when a setting would make the file bigger without making it better.

MP3 is the format to pick when something has to play anywhere. WAV keeps every sample and is about ten times the size, which suits editing rather than sending. For speech, 128 kbps is plenty, and spending more on a voice recording buys almost nothing.

The work runs through ffmpeg compiled for the browser. It is fetched once and kept, so a second visit starts at once and a long recording never waits on an upload.

Frequently asked questions

Is my audio uploaded?
No. Files are decoded on your machine and written back there. Interview recordings, voice notes and unreleased music never leave your device.
Does converting lose quality?
Going from one lossy format to another does, a little, every time. Going from WAV or FLAC to MP3 loses some once. Going the other way recovers nothing, it only grows the file.
Is there a length limit?
None that we set. Memory is the real limit, and a phone runs out sooner than a laptop.
Which format is best for speech?
MP3 at 128 kbps, or 96 kbps in mono for a plain voice recording. Anything more spends bytes on detail a voice does not carry.
Can I keep the track tags?
Where the format you pick supports them, yes. Converting to WAV drops them, because WAV has nowhere standard to keep them.
Why is the first convert slower?
The converter itself is fetched on the first visit and then kept. After that it starts at once, and it works with no connection.
