How it works
- 01
Type a length in feet
Decimals and fractions both work, so 5.5 and 5 1/2 give the same answer.
- 02
Read the centimetres
The factor is exact, so the only rounding is the precision you pick.
- 03
Copy it
One tap copies the number. The swap button reverses the conversion if you need to check it.

Where the number comes from
A foot is exactly 30.48 centimetres. It is twelve inches, and the inch has been exactly 25.4 millimetres by international agreement since 1959. So this conversion has no measurement error in it at all. Rounding enters only when the answer is printed.
The trap is a height written as 5.7 feet. That is not five feet seven inches. Seven tenths of a foot is 8.4 inches, so the two differ by nearly an inch and a half. To convert a height, add it up in inches first: five feet seven is 67 inches.
For a rough figure, multiply by 30 and add 2 per cent. Six feet gives 180 plus a little, and the exact answer is 182.88. That is close enough to know whether a wardrobe clears a ceiling.
